How Does the Eye Normally Work?

The light entering the eye through the cornea is focused over the retina. The retina converts light energy into electrical signals, which travel through the optic nerve to the brain.

Most light focuses on the macula, responsible for detailed central vision, colour vision, reading, recognising faces, and driving. The rest of the retina supports peripheral vision.

The Condition

What is an Epiretinal Membrane?

An epiretinal membrane is scar tissue that forms over the surface of the retina.

Normally, the eye is filled with vitreous gel attached to the retina. With age, this gel separates from the retina, called Posterior Vitreous Detachment. In some people, this separation causes a reaction on the retinal surface, leading to the formation of an epiretinal membrane. When this membrane contracts, it distorts the retina and causes vision disturbance.
